On the 15th and the 22nd of May 2010, 2 groups, Blackburn YMCA and Clitheroe youth took part in a scuba diving taster session at
Altogether the sessions were a success as there was a different age range on the two dates. On the 15th of May was the junior session and there was 3 participants from Clitheroe and 2 participants from Blackburn YMCA. After being given a brief description of the equipment used, the young divers hit the water doing a bit of snorkelling for a warm up and to get used to breathing under water. During the scuba exercises the groups learnt the different equipment used to scuba, BCD, regulator, air tank etc. they also learnt the different hand signals they use to communicate under water with their diving buddies.
After been given all the safety measures, they then descended down and did some breathing exercises under water and some buoyancy control exercises learning to use there breathing and equipment to keep them suspended in the water of the bottom and under the surface. After getting used to the sensation of being able to breath under water they were taken down to the deep end of the pool to do a few laps of the pool with the assistance of the dive masters.
After the session, the dive masters said that they were both great groups and listened to the instructions well and that they are more than welcome to do it again. After the session the participants of both groups said that “ it is a very weird feeling being able to breath underwater it's something new looking up and being able to see the spectators through the surface of the water and that it is a feeling that they will remember for the rest of there time.”
